Institute of Schooling Reform and Development of ECNU is the key research base for Humanities and Social Science of Ministry of Education, PRC, which is an entity institute affiliating to ECNU.  Professor Li Zhengtao is the director, and Professor Ye Lan is the honorary director.


The institute consists of four branches, “School Integration Reform Institute”, “Education Policy Theory Institute”, “Education and Student  Development Institute” and “Teacher Education Institute”. The principles of pedagogy and the history of education are among the first batch of doctoral degree awarding points in my country, a national key discipline, a post-doctoral mobile station site for pedagogy at East China Normal University, and a key discipline for the construction of 211 Project and 985 Project. Since its establishment, the Institute has been awarded an excellent grade twice out of the three evaluations organized by the Ministry of Education.


Since the institute was named the key Humanities and Social Science research base of Ministry of Education, PRC, we try our best to do researches according to the requirement of Ministry of Education. During the first three years, the researchers have succeeded in applying 32 study objects that belong to our nation or province, 40 landscape orientation objects, with the study expense adding up to more than six million. 66 books and 260 articles have been published, among which 11were awarded provincial and ministerial outstanding achievements of Humanities and Social Science Award. The institute was admitted excellent one when experts coming from Ministry of Education evaluated it in 2004. Expert Group considered that it had formed the kind of characteristics, theory relating to practice; a higher academic grade; scientific research and academic building mutual promotion; theoretical research, practice research and policy advice balanced development.


Research features

With the purpose of grasping the characteristics of social transformation, deeply studying the contemporary problems of basic education, taking root in the reality of Chinese education, dynamically constructing new schools in the 21st century, giving full play to the comprehensive advantages of disciplines, and boldly exploring the path of innovation in educational research, the research is carried out from the macro level of education system and policy research, the meso level of school transformation research, and the micro level of curriculum, teaching, teacher and student development With high-quality research and major research projects as the core, it actively promotes the practice reform and theoretical innovation in the fields of balanced development of regional compulsory education, evaluation of education modernization, education governance system and governance capacity-building, and forms the research characteristics of interaction and symbiosis of theory and practice, which has an important academic influence in the field of basic education reform and development at home and abroad. In practice, the Institute has carried out extensive cooperative research with schools and education bureaus in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Anhui, Hubei, Chongqing, Fujian, Shandong and Sichuan to guide and promote the development of local schools.


In recent years, the Institute has carried out regional cooperation with Jinshan District of Shanghai, Jianggan District of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Rongchang District of Chongqing, Hefei Economic Development Zone of Anhui, Haiyan County of Zhejiang and Jiangyang District of Luzhou City, Sichuan, etc. to improve the quality of education and promote the development of regional education modernization.
