On the morning of August 11th, 2017, Prof. Hans Forssberg and Prof. Diane L. Damiano visited the Department of Rehabilitation and Education, Faculty of Education, accompanied by Prof. Du Qing, the Director of the Rehabilitation Department of Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Prof. Hans Forssberg is the Chairman of the International Alliance of Academies of Childhood Disability (IAACD), the Director of the Stockholm Brain Research Institute, the Director of Neurodevelopmental Disorders Center of Karolinska Institute and Member of the Nobel Prize Selection Committee. Prof. Diane L. Damiano is the director of the Functional and Applied Biomechanics Department, Physiatrics of National Institutes of Health(NIH) of America, well-known Magazine Editor of Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, Developmental and Child Neurolog and Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation.
Liu Qiaoyun, Deputy Director of the Department of Rehabilitation and Education, introduced the history and development of the department and laboratory, as well as the achievement and social influence on the aspect of teaching and research, talent training and community service.
First of all, Liu Qiaoyun introduced the idea and experience of Comprehensive Rehabilitation with the integration of both medical and education. She emphasized that in order to improve the effects of special child education and rehabilitation, much attention should be paid on the integration of assessment and training in auditory, verbal, linguistic, cognitive, emotional and behavioral, motor and learning abilities. Prof. Hans Forssberg and Prof. Diane L. Damiano highly approved this idea as it meets the practical needs of special-need children which provides a golden opportunity for special education and rehabilitation for children in the future.
Prof. Hans Forssberg and Prof. Diane L. Damiano subsequently showed great interest in pre-service and in-service talent training program. They asked about the training scale of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs for each year, and the in-service training methods of the Department of Rehabilitation and Education. Besides, they expressed their appreciation in the pioneering work that our university had done before and showed expectations to the “5th Rehabilitation Skills Competition for Education in China”.
In the end, Prof. Hans Forssberg, Prof. Diane L. Damiano and Du Qing expressed gratitude to the warm reception offered by Department of Rehabilitation and Education. They all look forward to further enhancing communication and cooperation as soon as possible.
