对话摘要:
The modern caricature of academic leaders, especially in contexts such as the UK and Australia, is that they are devotees of neo-liberalism and management speak; overpaid, uncaring bullies pursuing a lucrative career option, in love with performance indicators and the empty rhetoric of managerialism. Academic leaders or managers are believed to have, as one of my colleagues put it some years ago, ‘gone over to the dark side’. Then, there is the alternative caricature of the golden age of the collegial Western university when ‘administration’ was performed by benign gentlemanly figures. The current reality of academic leadership lies somewhere in-between these two largely inaccurate representations of present and past. In order to reconnect academic leadership with academic citizenship we need to re-imagine leadership as part of a duty to serve. This means that being an academic leader should not be thought of as a purely self-centred career choice by the excessively ambitious nor an unwelcome collegial obligation perceived as a temporary distraction from research interests. Instead, leadership needs to be reimagined as the privilege to promote the liberal values – humility, openness, respectfulness, honesty, and tolerance – which are core to academic life itself. Leaders play a vital role in protecting common cultural norms such as collegial self-governance, merit-based systems for appointment and promotion, and rigorous peer review. There are many contemporary threats to these values such as rising egoism connected with bibliometrics, cronyism in academic appointments, bullying both from above and from below, and censorship in the face of rising nationalism and intolerance within wider society. Being an academic leader is much more than a professional obligation; it is a vital means of upholding the values and standards of the academic profession that make universities special institutions. This moral purpose of academic leadership needs to be promoted to counter the negativity of philosophical critics who free ride on the privileges of academic life but are largely unwilling to serve as leaders themselves in service of others.
